11 Jul Data strategy for ship performance excellence
Operational data collection
The demand for operational data collection in the maritime industry has never been higher, and the same ship can generate, collect and compute data for many stakeholders: the owner, the charterer, the regulator, the authorities, and more.
For ship performance excellence, we rely on three types of information:
- Manual data (e.g. noon reports) from the crew. The figures reported can come from on-board measurement devices or from human observations.
- Sensor data (e.g. flow meters) with automated and high frequency measurements.
- Third party sources (e.g. weather data, AIS, etc.) with a variety of communication protocols, sampling frequency and data formats.
While these sources give options to the ship owner and the charterer, the choice can become difficult if the pros and cons are not well understood. Usually, cost is used as the main selection criteria. However, there are many other factors to take into consideration:Type of trade the ship engages in.
- Type of trade the ship engages in.
- Ownership or charter duration.
- Age of the ship.
- Project budget and planning.
- Overall project objectives and strategic ambitions.
Here is a concise comparison between the two main options:
Trust and transparency
Operational data can support important decisions, such as performance assessment, commercial decisions and disputes arbitration. Therefore, trust in the data is critical. Ascenz Marorka acts in many situations as the third party of confidence mandated by different parties to provide faith in the data-driven process and/or the result. For example, Oil and Gas majors use our globally approved Electronic Fuel Monitoring System to ensure good and transparent use of fuel by the OSVs they charter. Also, Unifeeder and MPC Container Ships (MPCC) use our sister company solution (Vessel Performance Solutions) to monitor the installation of technical solutions and measure the efficiency savings from the installed energy-efficient technologies (EET) using real-time data.
Data quality
Whatever the data source is, data quality is key to support informed decision making and guarantee trust in conclusions.
There are four main categories of data quality verification:
- Missing data: ship is not sending data to shore.
- Out of bounds data: measurements fall outside realistic boundaries.
- Frozen data: a measurement/entry returns the same value for an extended period of time although variance is expected.
- Cross validation data: logic checks applied on many correlated parameters (e.g. speed and fuel consumption).
High Frequency Data Acquisition System (Autolog)
Ascenz Marorka has an extensive experience of 22 years in collecting sensor data for performance management purposes. Thanks to this experience, we are releasing a new generation of our DAS (Data Acquisition System) product.
The new DAS is easier to install and configure, more cost competitive and has numerous options to support multiple use cases (e.g. integrated motion sensor, integrated AIS antenna, support of multiple global positioning systems, communication protocols and embedded anti-tampering features).
Interoperability
In order to build a long term data-driven strategy, data interoperability is key to answer critical questions:
- Will I always have access to my data?
- Is the data format using international standards? Will I always be able to decode and read my data?
- Do I own the data? Can I share it with anyone I want?
At Ascenz Marorka, we genuinely believe in interoperability and respect the customer’s ownership of data. What really matters is the value we put on top of the data. The raw material (i.e. data) can come from anywhere (APIs, EDIs, DAS, etc.) and most importantly must belong to the customer with absolutely no ambiguity.
Conclusion
Ship performance excellence requires a structured data strategy to base decisions on reliable information. Ascenz Marorka supports the maritime players in their digital excellence journeys from data collection to performance optimisation.
